China-UK Seminar on Resources and Environment
The 20th Annual General Meeting of UK-CARE
In October 2019, the First World Young Scientist Summit (WYSS) was held with great success in Wenzhou, China. The Summit brought together more than 800 guests from 85 countries and regions, including Nobel Laureates, overseas academicians, young scientist representatives, leaders of international science and technology organizations. They exchanged views on scientific and technological innovation and the social responsibility of young scientists.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres said in his 2020 New Year’s Message “The greatest source of that hope–the world’s young people,I am inspired by your passion and determination. You are rightly demanding a role in shaping the future. I am with you. The United Nations stands with you–and belongs to you.The world needs young people to keep speaking out. Keep thinking big. Keep pushing boundaries. And keep up the pressure.”
At present, the global spread of COVID-19 has posed grave challenges to the world. The world public health system, international order and social dynamics are undergoing tremendous changes. As the future of the world, the young generation needs to exchange ideas, unite and work together to build a community for mankind with a shared future, thus creating a better future for human development. In order to better build a platform for China-UK scientific and technological innovation and cooperation, serve local scientific and technological development and industrial upgrading, and prepare for the post-epidemic era, UK China Association of Resources and Environment (UK-CARE), Young Earth Scientists (YES) Network and other institutions will co-host the “Seminar on China-UK Resources and Environment & The 20th Annual General Meeting of UK-CARE” under the framework of the “2020 World Young Scientist Summit”, with a theme of “sustainable development of resources, environment and cities”.
Young Earth Scientists (YES) Network is composed of young geoscientists under the age of 35 and geological workers just engaging in geological work from all over the world. YES was founded in 2008 under the support of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS) and the International Year of Earth (IYPE). It is one of the major achievements of the IYPE. UK China Association of Resources and Environment (UK-CARE) was founded in the UK in 2000. It has been actively undertaking various forms of academic, technical and knowledge exchange activities, and promoting the collaboration between academia, research and industry in the UK/EU and China. It aims to achieve sustainable development of the environment and economy in China and the UK for the well-being of their people using knowledge of science and technology. To provide strong support for the idea of ‘innovation promotes the development’, and services for ‘The Belt and Road’ regions for their social, environmental, energy and other areas of development, UK-CARE hopes to build a bridgehead to promote the science and technology collaboration between China and the UK. Therefore, in October 2020, on the occasion of the World Young Scientists Summit, UK-CARE will co-host their 20th Annual General Meeting, where experts and scholars from different countries will get together to undertake a meaningful discussion on the theme.

02. Sustainable Development of Resources, Environment and Cities

Resources and environment are the foundation for human survival. Sustainable development is a development mode under the premise of sustainable use of resources and environment, and it emphasises the equitable sharing of common natural resources with future generations. The development of a city involving resources, environment, economy and society is closely related to the sustainable development of natural resources and environment. The rapid urban development has greatly promoted the modernisation of the country, facilitated the economic restructuring, and improved the overall economic strength and international status of a country or a region while strengthening the overall urban economic strength and competitiveness. In the process of urbanisation, many countries have gradually exposed their contradiction with the sustainable use of resources and environment, which impedes the future sustainable development of cities.
The development of a city is restricted by the resources and environment of the surrounding areas and interconnected with mountains, waters, forests, lands, lakes, grasses, which are all integral components of an ecosystem. Maintaining a smooth material and energy transfer between components within an ecosystem is essential for the survival and development of mankind in a sustainable manner. Therefore, interdisciplinary integration of various complex processes within a city and surrounding natural resources and ecological environment systems is a challenge facing the world. However, 5G, the Internet of Things, environmental science modelling and other technical supports have provided opportunities for resolving this challenge. At the same time, taking the advantages of intelligent management and scientific decision-making is the inevitable trend in achieving the sustainable development of resources, environment and cities. For example, the current relative studies have accumulated rich knowledge of natural environmental and ecological processes, and hence various process-based computer models that can help people better understand the different processes and forecast the future development under different scenarios, such as climate change, and changes in human activities. The algorithms of these models are the important “intelligent” support for artificial intelligence implemented in complex applications. In this connection, the seminar will start from the sustainable development and interactions of resources, environment and cities, and focus on the following topics:
①Water resource and ecological environment
②Urban geology and environment
③Model and platform development and application in resources, environment and urbanisation
④Impacts of climate change and human activities on resources, environment &urban development
⑤Smart city, intelligent building and urban intelligent perception system
⑥New energy
