Global Bio2Bio Summit 2021 Conference Circular

           Background

                    The World Young Scientist Summit has been held in Wenzhou for two times successfully. The global scientific and technological guests (including Nobel Prize winners, overseas academicians and experts, representatives of young scientists and heads of international scientific and technological organizations) have been attracted to participate in the Summit and to jointly discuss the scientific and technological innovation and the social responsibilities of young scientists. In 2021, Mr. Antonio Guterres, Secretary General of the United Nations, addressed a letter to all the participants, affirmed that the declaration adopted at the World Young Scientist Summit was an important expression of supporting science to play a role in promoting human well-being and overcoming the novel coronavirus pandemic, and expressed thanks for "contribution to building a more inclusive, equitable, sustainable and peaceful future" made by participants in the Summit, and also looked forward to responding to the challenges of climate change and so on together with the participants and colleagues.

                   At present, the novel coronavirus pneumonia epidemic is spreading worldwide, and economic recovery is still a great issue and challenge facing the whole world. Great changes have taken place in the world public health system, international order and world situations. As the future of the country and the world, young people need to share ideas and contribute wisdom to promote the building of the destiny community of mankind and create a better future for human development. With the purposes of bringing together global leaders in the field of life sciences, exploring how to overcome obstacles and threats to the harmony of the earth's living beings in a new way and to benefit all mankind, researchers and entrepreneurs will be invited to participate in the Summit and discuss how to protect biodiversity and avoid threats through international cooperation projects, and how to maximize the positive role of such projects. Meanwhile, the application of natural animals and plants in medicine field will be discussed, and the ways and economic tools to use biological resources for the future of the earth will be discussed.

(2) Branch venue: Biodiversity and biosecurity problems and ways to tackle them

At the onset of the Decade of Action to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), COVID-19 has disrupted the world. Climate change, biodiversity loss, fragile health systems, dwindling economies, and social disintegration could be exacerbated by the response to the pandemic. In this special session, we hope to jointly explore cooperation in biodiversity and biosecurity and other fields through dialogue between Europe and Asia. The topics are set as follows:

·Key technologies and response to global epidemic diseases;

·Pandemics as a response of the disrupted ecosystem;

·International, regional and national policies for biodiversity protection;

·Development of the unified biodiversity surveillance mechanisms;

·Biosecurity, open science, and common responsibility of global researchers;

·Do-It-Yourself Biology and Genetic modification: risks and opportunities;

·What a new Bio2Bio center can do?

Time: 14:30-16:30, May 13 (Thursday) Beijing Time (GMT+8)

Venue: Meeting Room of Xiaocun Commune hotel in Taishun County

Academic convener:

·Velia Siciliano, chief researcher of National Institute of Science and Technology, Italy

·Yi Shi, Professor, Institute of Microbiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Director-general of Youth Innovation Promotion Association,CAS

(3) Branch venue: Biotechnology and Biomedicine

To create new paradigms for conservation based on the ecosystem service of drug discovery, partnerships are needed among scientists to identify species and isolate compounds, social scientists to assess community needs and ensure community empowerment, and policy makers to produce legislation to guide protection and to develop models for sustainable agriculture and research involving modern biotechnology and chemistry. Here we need to create a common platform for:

·Collecting, cataloguing, and curating the traditional knowledge;

·Collecting evidences from existing peer reviewed academic literature;

·Making recommendations for new drug discovery based on acquired information from the traditional knowledge and existing research;

·Creating a comprehensive searchable database of the collected traditional medicine information with links to existing research publications;

·Examining and curating existing national and international policies and intellectual property laws regarding discovery and use of medicinal compounds/species in different countries; conservation policies and laws for using the natural products;

·Establishing the connection with traditional/natural medicine industry for potential collaboration with research (e.g. to develop a new research funding scheme);

·Understanding the traditional medicines and pseudomedicines “market” in various geographic areas (geography, species) and its’ impact on habitats, species, and humans.

·Exploration of the new and existing sustainable gateways of natural medicines into the pharma, food and cosmetics.

Time: 16:30-18:30, May 13 (Thursday) Beijing Time (GMT+8)

Venue: Meeting Room of Xiaocun Commune hotel

Academic convener:

·Vidushi Neergheen, associate professor from University of Mauritius

·Shaobo Fang, professor of the Key Laboratory of Photophysics, Institute of Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences

(4) Branch venue: International wetland cities help the sustainable development of cities

Wetland covers only 6% of the earth's surface, but it provides the living environment for 20% of the known species on the earth, and has irreplaceable ecological functions, so it enjoys the reputation of "the kidney of the earth". In early 2017, the meeting of the performing countries of the International Convention on Wetlands first proposed to launch the "International Wetland City" certification globally. With such certification, it will make all countries to attach importance to the wetland protection, advocate the reasonable utilization of wetland ecosystem in cities, maintain the close relationship between social, economic and cultural development and wetland ecosystem services, and realize the reasonable and sustainable utilization of the wetlands. The “International Wetland City” certification is firstly nominated by governments of different countries. Then, the International Wetland Convention Organization (an organization linking governments of different countries under the United Nations) will make evaluation and certification, and finally grant the medal and award to the city certified as "International Wetland City". The declaration and building of the “International Wetland City” represents the highest achievement of a city in wetland ecological protection. How to properly protect and utilize wetland resources and provide sustainable geographical space for sustainable development of cities are focused topics that we need to explore and study.
